Mercruiser - why wont it stay running.

Already checked fuel pumps and rebuilt them. There must be a problem in between the fuel pumps and the carburetor. 43 liter mercruiser engine starts but will not stay running.
There is live power to the electric fuel pump with the switch in the cranking position however when switch is released the on position the live power at the fuel pump ceases and the engine will not stay running. Switch and fuel pump and starter and solenoid have all been recently replaced. Mercruiser - why wont it stay running.
I bought a 1974 mericruiser 4cyl. Inboard boat and it runs great until you are on the water for about thirty minutes. It then starts cutting out and eventually wont start.
We have to get towed back to shore. A bad coil would but it seemed in your original post that the motor started while cranking then died when the key was turned to the run position. If this is true then the coil is OK.
Rather than run the new wires that you mention just turn your key on and see if 12v is present on the side of the coil. Engine will not stay running without choking Your symptoms are that of dirty carbs. Not uncommon to have to do them a time or two to get them clean enough.
Assuming you set your needles after tear down. It is normal to sometimes have to push the key again during warm up but not right to have to keep doing it beyond one or two minutes. A 2 cycle engine may start but not stay running if the carburetor is malfunctioning if the gas is old and dirty if the fuel line is clogged or if the spark plugs are dirty or broken.
To fix each part remove and replace or clean them. Engine Starts But Will Not Keep Running. Disengage driven Units and check for loading from malfunctioning accessories.
Make sure shutdown is not occurring too soon. Bleed the fuel system and check for suction leaks. Drain fuel-water separator or replace filter.

The absence of any one of these elements will result in the engine failing. So an engine that starts and then dies means that one of these elements is lacking. Here are the tests that will resolve the problem.
In some cases the outboard may start right up and keep running when the throttle is set in neutral. However it shuts down when you return your boat to idle speed when in neutral. When this happens your boat is likely to have a broken or sticky automatic idle speed AIS valve.
Also if the boat has been run aground in sand frequently the impeller in the water pump may not move much water. If there is a sensor looking at flow through the cooling system it would shut down for lack of water. If you dont know if the boat has been sucking sand look at the prop and the bottom of the boat.

If the engine continues to run check the wiring and ign switch for a bad connection or broken wire. I finally got the engine to crank with every turn of the key but it will not run. It starts and it may run for a few seconds then it dies.

I am new to this forum because i just purchased a 92 sea doo sp bombardier for 100. I got everything running right but it wont stay running unless i hold down the switch to start it. I cleaned the carb.
Replaced all fuel lines and its getting gas and everything. As soon as i let off of the button it dies. Also it smokes.
F150 Starts But Wont Stay Running. The most common reason behind the problem is faulty fuel system. The fuel system comprises the fuel tank fuel pump injectors and carburetors.
It helps provide a fuel-air mixture in the engine and ensures the proper flow of fuel to the engine. Johnson 99 wont stay running. I have a 97 Johnson 99 that will start but after idling for a minute or so will just quit running.
While the engine is running it runs great. Im sure the problem is fuel related because I can keep the engine going a little longer if I press the primer button key switch. You cant really tell much by running it on the trailer.
One thing you might want to do is set the idle at about 3000 rpm while on the trailer it should run about 1500 rpm in the water. You could also check the compression while on the trailer 150 psi is perfect not less than 120 psi and no more than 10 difference between cylinders. Ok - Its prob located somewhere in this forum but I cant find something that relates to this.
So my apologies if im doubling up here. I started the bike this morning after it has been running fine and it was hard to start. But when it did start and i let go of the throttle expecting it to simply idle it died.
Suggest you get it running again and richen it up counter clockwise until it stumbles then lean it just enough to smooth it out no more. Generally there is also an idle speed screw which is seperate from the mixture screw.
