You do not need to be connected to a mobile data network whilst using the plotter though as the GPS works independently so you can happily navigate offshore.
IPads are hard to read in sunlight and are a bit. The non-3G iPad does not need a GPS receiver because it does not use cell phone technology. The Navionics app will work on a non-3G iPad as long as you are near a WiFi signal.
Its unlikely that youll find a WiFi signal out in the Pacific. The Navionics app will work out there on a non-3G iPad - it just wont tell you where you are. If you have an iPad with a Sim card slot for mobile telephony then it will have GPS built in and it will work directly with Navionics.
If you have a wifi only iPad you do not get the GPS chip. Virtually all Android tablets have a GPS chip included and you pay less. Works well for this app.
Works well with Navionics and OpenCpn. Which ever you go with be sure to get a good water resistant case for it. I dont think there is a tablet model thats water proof in itself and if there is it will be very expensive.
The Navionics Boating App is free to download then you just purchase the charts that you want to use. Purchasing the charts unlocks all of the apps features and permits use across all your devices that are logged in to the same Navionics account.
