The most common source of trouble when the engine cranks but wont start is the ignition or fuel system. But the engine still wont start.
Cranking is the process of turning the engine over.
Engine turning but not starting. If the engine is turning over but not starting we can immediately eliminate the starter the ignition switch and all the wiring in between. We can also eliminate the battery as the cause because if the battery has no juice left in it the starter will not engage and the engine will not turn over. So your engine turns over but will not start.
It usually means your engine is having trouble with spark fuel compression or timing. So what do you do if all those things check out good. But the engine still wont start.
The source of the problem could be. The most common source of trouble when the engine cranks but wont start is the ignition or fuel system. Make sure you got enough fuel pressure and good spark.
Also a faulty sensor crankshaft position sensor or camshaft sensor on some models or throttle position sensor may cause this problem as well. If the engine cranks but car wont start then something is wrong with the ignition system. The system consists of multiple components and all may have a role in an unsuccessful start.
Unless the car does not produce a nasty grinding noise the starter is probably not the culprit. So if the car will turn over starter will rotate the engine but not start. It means that one or more of these necessary factors is missing.
Easiest to check is Air. Make sure theres no blockage at the intake or air filter housingor in the ductwork between the two. Fuel is a little more difficult.
Verify that the battery has a full charge. A battery with a low or partial charge can cause the engine to crank too slow preventing it from starting. Sometimes a jump will fix this problem but if your battery is more than five years old you should consider replacing it especially if winter is only a few months away.
If the engine still wont start the most likely culprit is a lack of compression. Advance carries compression testers that thread into the spark-plug holes and read compression when you turn the engine over. After making sure the engine wont start when you crank it remove one plug and thread the tester in the hole.
Some remote starters have a voltage cut off which will cause issues if the battery voltage drops below a certain level - depending on the remote starter. Check the battery connections as well as charge it and try again. Check for loose wires and verify that the solenoid is functioning.
Check to be sure the manual shut-off lever is in the Run position. If the condition occurs during initial start following an extended period of non-use or replacement of a fuel system component air. When you reconnect the battery it takes FOREVER for the engine to start and stay running because the ECM has lost all its sensor data.
Even after it starts itll run like crap for several minutes until the base data is recovered. When I replace the battery in my 09 I thought Id broken it LOL. It took FOREVER to get it started.
If its still not turning over check your grounds for corrosion. If you hear a little noise from your starter now but the engine still wont crank you probably have a bad starter motor. The car experienced no problems starting prior to today.
Yesterday I started it drove it came home and parked without any hint of a problem. Today I went to start the car and the engine turns over very sluggishly but will not start. So far Ive checked the following.
Battery is OK Fuel pump energizes on accessory mode Fuel pump relay fuse is. Cranking is the process of turning the engine over. You generally know this through the starter as you turn the key on your mower.
Depending on your style of mower and model the testing purposes could be a little different but they are mostly the same. It happens your battery has a low voltage. The repetitive clicking sound is a weak electrical current to start the engine of your car.
If the starter relay does not receive a full signal your car will not start. Sometimes your engine fires up immediately while at times it. First steps in a no start is to check your three major players fuel air and spark.
Forget what the fuel gauge says it could have broken or the fuel pump fuse may have blown or its relay broke. Get a can of starting fluid undo the air hose to the air cleaner and spray a shot or two down the pipe. With a bad battery your engine will never start.
As we said before if your truck turns over the problem doesnt have to do with starting issues. However sometimes bad batteries might not maintain the electrical charge and lose it over time due to corroded or loose battery connections. Thus you cannot eliminate the battery unless you perform a quick jump start and ensure that the battery did not.
When you just hear the starter engine then it could be one of your pipes are not connected or connect wrong. Check your engine get air from above. Check you engine have the excaust pipe outside the ship.
Try to possition your fuel tank higher than your engine. If the engine is below the water line then you need a pump to pump in airexcaustfuel. If the starting system is not capable of turning the engine fast enough do some testing and find out why.
The technician might need to start with an inspection of the batteries which will include a load test of the batteries some voltage drop testing of the negative and positive sides of the starter circuits and maybe a current draw test on the starter. 35 years of experience. If the starter motor turns but the starter pinion drive gear is not engaging the flywheel and turning the engine there is a fault with the pinion drive gear andor the actuating solenoid.
The power to the solenoid can be checked. Why your car lights come on but wont start. Cars always choose the worst time to break down.
If your car refuses to start but the light keeps turning on several factors might be responsible for that. Anyways whether the light is coming on or not you should avoid turning the key for a long time as it might destroy the starter engine.
