Installing a windlass on a boat. Use a template to plan where you will install your windlass. Check that your gypsy will line up with your bow roller and that the rode will run level within 10 degrees. Note that this usually means the windlass itself will be offset from the center of the boat.
Before drilling make sure there are no obstacles below deck. Had to learn in the installation process. Each boat is different regarding mounting location wiring and rode needs.
So I cant offer a step-by-step process for your boat. But I can ex-plain how to research a windlass in-stallation how to determine what your options are and how it worked for me. As it turns out the windlass itself is.
Use your hand with a finger on the inside to help you draw a level line 2. Then use an electric grinder with a thin cutting wheel 3 to cut along that line and remove the anchor rest so theres room for the windlass mount. Lay the new windlass mount and all parts into the locker and trace your cuts.
Your boat could locate the roller to either side and if so arrange the setup so that the roller is oriented fore and aft and the windlass is directly as possible aft of it in a convenient location. The windlass doesnt have to be close to the roller. It just needs to pull the rodechain in without interfering with hatches and other stuff.
The loads placed on windlasses are often significant and thus the method used to secure it to the deck must be equally robust. Through-bolts that are the largest that will fit in mounting holes along with a substantial backing plate or plates that are at least as large as the footprint of the windlass base are prerequisites. Backing plate material should be stainless steel or most preferred GPO-3 fiberglass sheet the thickness of which is dependent upon the size of the windlass.
Windlasses are pretty tedious to install because you are working end-to-end on the boat. Snaking wiring up to the bow which will have to go through the cuddy. You will want the wiring to be goodsafehidden.
Then there is the work in the bow. You will need to figure out what stylebrandmodel of windlass you want to install. You sometimes have to pause and reach in and push the line around if it piles up too high it hangs up in a bump in the locker.
I strongly recommend adding foot switches or as I did a hand controller at the bow. Install the windlass as far back in the anchor access area as possible. Its finicky to use but it beats hauling up the hook by hand.
A windlass handles a significant load so having a solid deck to mount it on is the most important first step. Look below the deck to see if a bulkhead or stringer on the underside of the deck needs to be avoided as you install the new windlass. You should be sure the deck can support the loads on the windlass.
Lewmar Pro Fish 700 would work I had one on a previous boat and loved it. Mount the deploy and retreve control at the helm you can stay at the helm to deploy and retrieve your anchor. The 700 is a free fall windless so when you select to lower the anchor it will let the anchor rode out free fall when you want to set the anchor choose the retrieve button and it will hold the rode and you can set.
What I didnt expect was how much I had to learn in the installation process. Each boat is different regarding mounting location wiring and rode needs. So I cant offer a step-by-step process for your boat.
But I can explain how to research a windlass installation how to determine what your options are and how it worked for me. A windlass installation consists of several parts. Buy us a coffee. Install a Lewmar V700 Electric Windlass using the existing anchor locker to hold the windlass motor. This plan would allow Mills to operate the anchor without leaving the helm for both dropping and pulling up the anchor.
My 288 doesnt have a windlass so I very rarely anchor anywhere because of the challenge of manually dropingraising anchor especially if Im on my own. Im considering adding a windlass as the boat is already prewired for it but I got a quote from the show in the neighborhood of 2500-3000 for the windlass install. Installing a windlass may seem like a job that should be left for the pros but for those with a bit of bravery and some basic mechanical skills the task can be a pleasant experience.
The complexity of the installation will primarily depend on the layout and design of the your boat. Most windlass manufacturers publish a cable size guide which will give you the exact cable size you require but below is a rough guide to get you going. 1000w - 0-15m 25mm2 Cable Required - 15-24m 35mm2 Cable Required.
Generally anything larger than 1000w will need a battery to be placed near the windlass in the bow of the boat but smaller. You may have room aft of the locker hatch cover. The only thing is the windlass hole needs to be in the center of the locker so everything will work easily and not get hung up.
I dont recommend 3 stand rope either. I had it before and it always knotted up. I ended up with a yacht braid that will work with the windlass gypsy.

Played myself out lifting the anchor manually so this would be a welcome addition to the boat. On the other hand older or smaller boats with limited space in the anchor locker may benefit from installing a horizontal windlass. With the motor housed in the deck unit theres more room for stowing chain below and being higher off the deck a horizontal model may offer a cleaner run of chain or rode over a high toerail.
