I noticed that the level in my power steering reservoir was low and that the water in my bilge was oily.
Mercruiser power steering pump problems. Dec 18 2009. I have a 1994 Mercruiser Mag454EFI in a 24 Mariah. The power steering failed this past season and I would like to know the best way to troubleshoot the issue.
All belts are in place and arent slipping the pump has the correct fluid and level no oil is leaking and the hoses look to still be in good shape. A heads up for those of you that have Mercruiser enginesdrives with power steering. I noticed that the level in my power steering reservoir was low and that the water in my bilge was oily. Old weak batteries are often the cause of poor power steering performance.
If your batteries are original to the boat they may need replacement. Even if they are relatively fresh they may need to be charged. The power steering current draw is so high that the batteries may not recharge during a few hours of operation.
You are looking for the plug closest to the power steering pump. Test there first them move to the other side of the black box Steering module and run the test again. Pay close attention to the wire colors when testing.
