I found that the new 2002 60 hp 4 stroke has EFI the powerhead is made by Merc but some of the internal parts are still made by Yamaha. I apologize in advance for the length of this post but I want to put as much information out there to help solve this issue.
The engine immediately re-started each time.

On my last outing the engine died 5 times within 20 minutes while planing. The engine immediately re-started each time. I took it to a warranty shop but the mechanics did not find the problem.
So I am left with dealing with the problem on my own. Our 2003 60-HP Mercury four-stroke suddenly dies at high speeds after about a minute unless we continually prime the primer bulb on the gas tank. When it runs it runs well.

I did try vice grips on the shift shaft. 2011 Mercury 60 hp 4 stroke It wont shift into reverse. Disconnected cable it moves freely.
Disconnected cable it moves freely. Dropped lower unit and can shift with vice grips to forward and neutral but not reverse. I have recently purchased a 2007 Mercury 60 hp 4-stroke EFI and it is unable to get over 4000rpm - although out of gear it can easily get to 6000.
I know that it has some kind of protection system perhaps this has triggered. How best to untrigger this. It will need a full overhaul new impeller etc perhaps its is overheating slightly.
I have a 2008 4 stroke Mercury 60 bigfoot on pontoon boat. When I attempt to go full throttle it will run fine for a few seconds and then start bogging down andor lose power. It started doing this late last summer and I looked at it for a couple weekends.
I have a Mercury 60 HP EFI that when I first got it the RPM went well over 5000 now barely make it up to 4000. It had a lot of get up and go and now has. One of the musts on these engines is to change the small pre fuel filter on the side of the engine and also the high pressure fuel filter which sits underneath the coil pack at the bottom of the block you will need to remove the side cowling to do this when my engineer serviced my 50 efi he said many engineers do miss changing this also check the high pressure fuel pump housing isnt full of.

The engine starts up great and runs fine until you go over 5rpms. To describe it best it stutters. The engine will cut out and then go then cut out and go a little.
It rocks the boat forward then stops and so on until it eventually is idling. And switch failure does not set a code. If you have a Mercury EFI 4 stroke I recommend you get to know the symptoms of FSM problems and dont let the shop BS you around installing filters and replacing fuel line bulbs.
This isnt caused by ethanol but by cheap OEM sourcing by Merc. Next time itll be a Honda for me. Mercury 60 HP four stroke running hot.

I have 1995 pro 17 with a 60 hp mercury. Last fall it began to spit a little but was not a continuous problem. This spring Ive only been able to get out twice and so far both times full throttle out of gear no problem with engine.
