The recommended spark plug for the 1977 model 75 hp Mercury outboard is a Champion L78V or NGK BUHW-2. I have a 2000 mercury 20hp 2 stroke it has compression it has fuel but no spark it ran with a sluggish sounded like one cylinder was firing so I replaced the plugs and one plug wire was broken so I put a new wire on too and it ran like a scalded dog for about 1 hr went back to the boat ramp and had my buddy get the trailer and it stalled about 4 times but kept turning.
Second rule follow the steps spelled out in the RapairCDI Ignition Troubleshooting Guide to the letter.

Make sure that all wires are connected properly. If there is no start from the engine there may be no spark present. Check that the spark plug for the engine is free of decay and is clean.
If there is any water on the spark plug check for leaks. The kill circuit its magneto ignition so the key circuit shorts it to ground. When you have no spark its the first thing to check.

Hi I just bought a 94 - 130 SWS which was recently serviced and is very clean. It started fairy quickly but when I put it in the water I could not get over 2000 RPM except twice when I got to 4200. Upon testing I discovered a fried ignition coil and replaced but had the same problem.
