Hello I have what I beileve is a 87-88 25 hp Mercury outboard that had been sitting for the past few years ran when I parked it no spark last night when I tried to start it. Mercury Mariner 90hp no ignition spark help check for a fall overboard kill switch and if you find it make sure its engaged to fire.
Disconnecting the engine harness to the motor is an easier way to see if the problem lies in the key and throttle areas. The engine should get spark if the harness is disconnected from the helm hope this helps a bit. Disconnect the Mercury Outboard switch and reset if the engine fires replace the Mercury Outboard switch.

Faulty emergency kill switch. Some engines – not the pull-start kind – have a battery that starts it. If your engine has a battery make sure it is charged up before use.
Verify the battery connections are clean – as corroded connections can keep a Mercury outboard. Your outboard stator is the powerhouse of your outboards ignition system. Most Mercury Outboard Stators perform two important functions 1.
They provide voltage to your switchbox or CDMs. They charge your vessels batterys. A faulty or failing stator can cause one or more symptoms.
Engine fails to run and has no spark. Engine is hard to start especially after. If there is still no spark the next thing to check for is a faulty stop switch.
The stop switch circuit is disconnected and the spark output is retested. On small pull start outboards the stop button is located and the two stop switch wires are followed back to where they originate. One goes to earth on the outboard and the other goes to the CDI.
The wire that goes to the CDI is disconnected and spark. Since you have replaced everything ignition related except the sensor assembly it is the only part left that could cause the no spark issue. When they start leaking they are usually bad so you were on the right track anyway.
Hey GuysGals Im new to the forum here but I am excited to help contribute to the outboard world I dont have a whole lot to offer right now for I am very new with outboards and I unfortunately have a Force the good thing about that is I will be constantly working on it so Im sure I will learn A lot. I checked the spark and I wasnt getting anything. I then followed the service manual suggested troubleshooting approach. Spark plugs- checked out fine- still no spark.
Unhooked both harness and all wires from cutout switch still no spark. Points coils wires and condensers. Disconnect the mercury tilt switch and retest.
If the ignition works properly replace the mercury switch. Connect a spark gap tester to the spark plug wires and check for fire on all cylinders. If some cylinders fire and not others the problem is likely in the distributor cap rotor button or spark plug.
That said this write-up will only focus on ignition system troubleshooting as opposed to other possible causes for an engine that cranks but wont fire up eg. Internal powerhead damage low compression issues water in engine low or no fuel pressure etc. NEVER spark or briefly touch the marine battery terminals with the battery cable connections so as to.
Posted 10-22-2013 1018 AM ET US My 1988 Mercury 115-HP in-line six-cylinder outboard engine also known as a Tower of Power has spark on cylinders 1 4 and 6 but no spark on cylinders 2 3 and 5. Often a faulty CDI unit will see intermittent or no spark on cylinders and may only breakdown when your engine warms up. Receiving voltage from the CDI unit the coil will amplify voltage and shoot it through to the spark plug. Faulty or damaged coils will have weak or no output.
Have a helper crank the engine over with the spark plug wires disconnected and check for spark on the spark tester. If you now have spark the stop circuit is faulty kill switch key switch or grounded. If still no spark then check all of the cylinders with the spark tester and post back what you find and the serial number.
