Outboard starts but wont stay running. In some cases the outboard may start right up and keep running when the throttle is set in neutral. However it shuts down when you return your boat to idle speed when in neutral. When this happens your boat is likely to have a broken or sticky automatic idle speed AIS valve.
Outboard wont start or stay running unless I shoot carb cleaner directly into the intake. Then it runs great and will stay running on carb cleaner. Already checked fuel pumps and rebuilt them.

Hello all Im a newbie to this and looking for help. I have a 1985 Yamaha 90etlk 2 stroke it will start and run at WOT but die seconds after putting it to idle. I have cleaned the carbs checked if Im getting gas to the bowls and checked the sparks and everythink seems to be good.
Why does my outboard start and runs for 1 minute then diesshuts off. Might be a stuck needle valve in the carb. Place the fuel can above the motor and see if that helps that will narrow down if the fuel pump is bad.
Im thinking dirty carb tho. 25 hp 2 cylinder2-cyclce outboard Merc wont start without carb cleaner and stay running. Remixed gasoil cleaned fuel filter replaced bulb on fuel tank checked gas from filter to carb O.
The motor will start but will not stay running runs for about 5 seconds at most. I checked the gear case oil it looks brown and has a strong odor. Also pulled the lower unit and the impeller doesnt look to be in that bad shape I get smoke coming from the propeller while trying to run it while connected to muffs.
When your outboard starts right up keeps running with throttle applied in neutral but shuts down the moment you come back to idle speed in neutral the issue is likely to be a sticky or broken AIS automatic idle speed valve. The throttle setting during starting has the expected effect - it revs up accordingly. However it doesnt seem to throttle up after starting. If I spray some starter spray in it runs maybe a few seconds longer.
1994-95 30 HP 2 stroke starts but wont stay running. My pontoon has a mid 90s Evinrude 30 HP motor. Bought it used a few years ago and gave me some problems early on but seems to have cleared up since I starting every season with 100 new gas including in the carb bowl every year.
There are different causes to this depending on your engines. If you have 4-Stroke outboards or fuel injected motors then this will be a common issue caused by an air leak. 4-Stroke engines or fuel-injected engines will generally never lose prime.

I ran the winterize procedure on both using the same 6 gallon gas tank that had been treated with evinrudes stabilizer I forget product name. Both were parked next to each other in the building. I didnt try using the 25 until May.

Idles fine in the driveway but as soon as its immersed in water it dies out. On the intermittent occasions I was actually able to finally get it started at the dock it would die after applied throttle continuously for approx 5 minutes. Check to make sure that the shifter is not in forward or reverse.
If the engine turns over or cranks like it always has then chances are you are looking at a fuel problem. Always start troubleshooting with the simplest items first. Check the fuel system step by step from the tank to the motor.
Many outboards wont start in gear and its easy to accidentally knock the gear shift into forward or reverse. Make sure youre in neutral. Battery If you have an electric-start motor it may be that the battery is low or dead.
If its a small HP 20 or under possibly larger it probably has a pull start as well and you can start it that way. 25hp yamaha wont stay running 11-18-2012 0710 AM. Guys i have a 1988 yamaha 25hp 25SG model two stroke tiller. I put it on the water and ran it about once a week on a 16 boat trolling with it for about 3-4 hours every time on idle.
Id go WOT for maybe 5 minutes and then drop down to idle and troll. The only issue I have ever experienced was if I dropped the RPMs very abruptly the engine would sputter and die but when restarted it would keep running. Force Mercury 40 hp wont stay running SUBSCRIBE SUBSCRIBE ADD TO FAV ORTIES.
