Put a spark checker on it to find it sparking only when I first started cranking and than let go of the key. You will have to choke it to shut it down and it could start from your turning the flywheel by hand.
The starter circuit will work if kill switch is removed and as long as white is still connected to ignition switch then it should run and shut off with key.
Outboard will not turn off with key. The length of time worsened until finally the outboard will not turn off even with the key in the off position. The kill switch does work if you pull out the plastic pin that attaches to a lanyard the engine shuts off immediately as it should. Check the loom for a ground signal shut down With the key off.
Next pulling the safety lanyard with the key on. Check again for the ground signal Be sure to replace the waterpump Big Steve. So just got back to the dock and low and behold my motor wouldnt shut off with either the key or kill switch I realize Yamahas like to run but this is a little more running than I need.
I had to pull the last fuse on the bottom of the motor I believe the ignition coil to shut it down. I just bought a 1978 silverline with an outboard 90 hp Johnson 4 cylinder 2 stroke when I turn the key to the off position the engine continues to run but it seems to be running on 2 cylinders. I dont know the age of the engine the model number is J90MLCTE The engine is not dieseling I would love to see an electrical print.
Evinrude saltwater 225 turn key to start it runs holding key on start let go of key it shuts off. Replaced ign switch purple ign wire hot both sides of plug tan wire hot at. The starter circuit will work if kill switch is removed and as long as white is still connected to ignition switch then it should run and shut off with key.
In other words it was not grounding out to engine. Once a outboard engine starts it supplys its own electricity to the ignition and wont stop until the key or kill switch grounds it out. You could say that but the connection controls more than just the ground.
A diode only allows the flow of current in one direction. The diode will prevent current from going back to the ignition switch and this will prevent a run on condition when the ignition switch is turned off. Use a Radio Shack 1N4001 diode or an equivalent value If that works you could keep it like that or rebuildreplace your alternator.
If none of the cylinders shut down when you turn off the key you most likely have a bad ignition switch open ground wire to the ignition switch or. Look at the back side of the key switch and make sure it is connected properly. With the engine running put a wire from the black ground to the white wire.
Does the engine stop. If not you may have a harness problem or a problem at the connector. Check the black wire on the key switch is grounded at all times.
Check these and post back what you find. In this video we look at all the reasons why an outboard with an electric start might not turn over. So youve just turned the key and nothing happens.
Thanks Boscoe Towsend and yam99. I conducted checks as described and engine shuts off when earthing wire from white cdi point is grounded. So CDI is good.
I ran a wire from the switch to the white cdi point still will not shut. So now I suspect key switch. Although I get an ohm reading in the off position for that switch.
These CDI units come in all different shapes and sizes and in this case these are two Yamaha ones and so heres the white wire one heres the white wire together so I know these are the two wires the go off to the kill switch. These switches can fail in a couple different ways one is that theyre permanently closed in which case you will never get spark and you wont be able to start the motor youll be all starting or turn. If so then it is safe to assume engine wiring and powerpack are OK.
Next I would check these two terminals on the control box side of the big plug with an ohm meter. With the key switch turned off the black yellow and black ground lead should show close to zero ohms resistance. There are a few other problems to consider here also.
If the engine doesnt crank at all turn the key to the on position and check to see if other lights and gauges operate correctly. If everything else is dead too check the outboards main fuse. If your boat has a battery switch ensure that its switched to the on position and try again.
Car would unexpectidly shut off while I drove around. Trying to restart the car proved nothing until we waited about 20 min to let it cool down it would than fire back up. Car was fine for a year than started doing the same crap.
Put a spark checker on it to find it sparking only when I first started cranking and than let go of the key. This post covers Suzuki outboards that have lost power from the remote at the helm to the engine. Nothing happens when you turn on the key switch or gauges function but engine wont crank Remote trim switch doesnt work but engine trim switch works Other electrical devices seem to work fine.
Turned off the key pause turn key back on and she fired up. Suzuki DF902011 Engine runs fine until about 2800 rpms then begins to run rough and wont accelerate over 3200 rpms. The motor will not shut off with the key during this test.
You will have to choke it to shut it down and it could start from your turning the flywheel by hand. I do not recommend you run the motor other than testing with this wire disconnected. Most outboards wont start unless the shifter is in neutral.
Double-check that the motor hasnt been left in gear by moving the shifter in and out of gear a couple of times. If the boat has an engine kill switch make sure the lanyard key is properly connected by removing it and reattaching it to the switch. We receive dozens of posts a day and it is quite impossible to reply to more than just a few given this is a free site and I dont have enough time given I have a day job.
It helps if you start the headline with your Evinrude outboard engine makemodel number or boat makemodel number. Why wont my outboard engine turn over. You can troubleshoot further by taking this starter off and disassembling it to see if you can clean the brushes and fix the solenoid if that is the issue.
You can also turn the key switch to the ON position. If you want to start the engine and then jump the starter again. Basic Troubleshooting When Your Outboard Wont Start.
