There should be a hole in the transom bracket usually the port side next to the TT with a large flat head screw thats slightly recessed. Ill be driving back to Madison tomorrow so I really need to get this fixed today.
It will be the one with a GREEN wire going to it.
Power trim goes down but not up. Drive Trims down but not up. Talk 2 Remove the plastic cover over the 2 solenoids on the trim pump. The solenoid wthe blue wire from the pump motor is the up solenoid.
You can jump the 2 top studs on it to see if the pump. Power trim goes down but not up. Do not remove the snap ring.
Is the down solenoid clicking. It will be the one with a GREEN wire going to it. If not just switch with the UP BLUE wire going to it if all goes well you have a bad solenoid.
This is one of the quickest ways to check. The set screw is on the side of the trim ram. My 1998 40 hp Force power trim will go down but not up.
The up relay clicks with the switch but the trim motor does not run. The motor runs when the down switch is activated. I suspect an electrical problem on the up wiring at the trim motor.
Do the symptoms suggest this is likely. The cure is to loosen one of the large tiltsteering nuts 12 turn then with a 24 and a large hammer force the swivel bracket sideways slightly. Force grease into the grease fittings on the front of the swivel bracket.
That should do it. POWER TILT TRIM Temporary Down Lockup. Tilt and trim not working.

Look for 2 relays next to eachother. One is for up the other down. Swap them and I bet it will go down if it does thats your problem.
Bring one of the old ones in to a auto parts store they will have what you need. If that doesnt work I would look at your switch you should have power 12v on the red wire in the up position there will be power to the blue wire in the down position it will power the green. Been using the power trim while out of the water and then we back it down into the water and the power trim wont go up or down.

Im up here in uppper Michigan on the last day of our vacation and when bringing the boat in I noticed the motor wont trim up. It does trim down though. Ill be driving back to Madison tomorrow so I really need to get this fixed today.
I dont know anything about how the trim motor and connections are hooked up. If you get to the ramp and the motor is halfway up but wont go either way when you press the trim switch you might have a corrosion build-up issue. Sometimes you can bang on the power tilt and trim motor with the head of a screwdriver or wrench and itll knock some of the corrosion off the brushes and the engine will then go up and down.
At the back left of the engine tray you should have 1 or probably 2 relaysEither loose connection or knackered relayTo check motor try 12v direct to the blue and green wiresReverse the polarity for up and down. Electrical or tilttrim motor issues. If you try to raise or lower the engine and nothing happens first check to make sure that the battery is charged and that the battery switch is in the on position.
Next listen for the solenoidstart relay while operating the control tilt switch up or down. You probably have a stuck valve in the pump. Try getting someone to push down on the drive leg hard while using the trim down switch.
Naturally youll want to be on the trailer or have a swimmer do chin ups on the ventilation plate if in the water. If you have it trimmed above the trim portion and you are into the tilt portion of the power trim and tilt then when you give it power it will not stay above the trim point. You will notice that when your motor is all the way down and you hit the trim up it goes slower and then about 13 of the way up it makes a different noise and tilts up faster.
The Trim Position Switch operates the Trim Gauge. When the Trim Position Switch fails the gauge usually pegs to full up. The Trim Limit Switch prevents the driver from over-trimming the outdrive while under way.

Soon as I get the steering fixed the starboard engine will not trip up on the 1988 Outrage 18 with 1996 Johnson 70-HP engines. Clamp around tilt tube do come loose. The trim limit switch has got nothing to do with trimming the motor down it is just an adjustable switch to limit the motor height so you dont hit the back of the boat it is wired in series with the up button. Black_Diamond Holland Michigan Member Posts.
You probably have a siezed or cracked actuator. You could put power to it direct and by-pass the switch then youll know forsure. Look for cracks or separation on the housing you might even see wateroil weeping from it.
The up and down relays are identical so switching them back and forth is OK. When switching the relays see if the problem changes directions. The engine outdrive trim tilt pump motor will work only if BOTH relays are connected.
This is because power to. Power tilttrim failure is a common problem. At least for me it has been.
