Replace pull cord mercury outboard. Last night while testing my outboard before moving my sailboat the pull cord broke off. Thinking this was no big deal I popped the top unscrewed a couple machine screws and rethreaded the cord. I reassembled the unit and now it does not pull or retract.
Instead of doing further damage i thought Id see if you guys had any suggestions. Get the proper replacement rope for your outboard motor. The boat-supply store should be able to help you find the correct replacement size and length if your owners manual isnt available.
Step 2 Use a socket and wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable if you have an auxiliary battery on board your craft. More than likely your starter spring has broken. The recoil starter will need to come off the engine the large reel removed and the spring underneath replaced.
It is not that bad a job if you have done one before but can be a bit dangerous as. Insert the replacement rope into pulley as originally routed and let the spring wind the rope back into pulley. Then replace the starter handle.

Posted on Jun 29 2010. Cant pull cord on Suzuki 25 outboard. This is the third year Ive owned my 25 outboard.
When I put it away last fall it was running great. Attempting to start it for the first time today the cord will only pull out about 6 inches before jamming. It will retract but will not pull properly.
