I think I got 40- 50 replies here. As others have suggested I would check for loose wiring first.
It seams to happen more often on hot days than on.
Starter gets hot and wont start. If your starter easily cranks a cold engine but drags or cranks very slowly when hot there may be a heat soak problem. Before you condemn the starter as bad you should perform a system diagnosis of the battery cables and starter. Heat affects the starter because heat directly affects the resistance of an electrical conductor.
As heat increases resistance increases which prevents current from flowing through the load your starter. The starter which requires alot of current and is located near large heat source your headers is very suceptible to heat soak. Wont start when the starter gets hot.

Check the wiring to the starter especially where they run near the exhaust. Mine did that for a while and it. Yes it is.
My 93 Tbird had a hard time starting over every time it would be hot out. It would crank really slow. Then about a week later drove to my sisters then back tried to go to the store nothing every thing else but it didnt crank.
So yes it could be your starter. Any easy way to tell is when you try to start it and it wont touch the positive wire from the battery see if its getting hot if it is then its definitely the starter drawing too much current as it tries to spin the engine because it is in fact faulty. My evaluation is that your hard-starting problem is not at all related to vapor lock but is related to heat soaking of the starter motor.
The heat increases the resistance which is why it starts when its cold but not when its hot. The issue is excessive resistance in the battery cables. If wires get hot when you try to start it and the motor is spinning over.
Then the motor isnt starting and your over heating the cables by using the starter too much. If the wires are getting hot but the engine isnt turning over then the starter is bad or the BIG wire going to the starter is shorted. It simply does not start when hot.
It starts easily and fast when cold - after holding for the heat plug - but while hot the battery barely turns it over and it will not start. The oil level is good the coolant too and according to the display the temperature never goes higher than half. My 1996 24L Tacoma would not start when hot.
After operating at temp and leaving it for 10-20 minutes it would not start. It cranked hard but would not start. Searching the Internet I have found its not such an uncommon problem.
I have seen many many suggestions but no one who actually solved the problem. I think I got 40- 50 replies here. If so it carries a chassis ground from the body through the starter to the solenoid.
The hot 12 volt cable from the battery to the solenoid makes a connection through the solenoid when you turn on the ignition key which spins the starter. As others have suggested I would check for loose wiring first. The starter did push through it but after about 12 of a revolution the engine kicked back as if the timing was too advanced.
That caused the starter pinion to kick out of the ring gear which resulted in the starter grinding. I then released my finger from the start button. Pushed it again and it started correctly.
When cold the bike starts fine. If you have a Stihl trimmer that wont start when hot the best solution to this problem is to perform regular maintenance on your equipment. Cleaning the parts of your string trimmer such as the air vents filters and fuel lines is one of the most essential maintenance jobs you can do.
If you have the instrumentation measure the current draw of the starter while cranking and compare it to specifications. If the current draw is high on cold and hot starts you probably have a dragging armature. If the current draw is okey cold but excessive hot there must be excessive load caused by the engine.
Cart Wont Start When your starter generator is getting too hot your cart may get stalled and not start over again. This might happen if the power received by the starter generator is. Sounds like a defective starter.
Could also be a mechanical defect that is creating lots of drag in the starter mechanism or the engine itself is very hard to turn over. Try turning the engine over by hand or by reverse driving it from the wheel with the trans in the highest gear to verify the engine is free. Discussion Starter 8 Mar 7 2012.
Hey guys just an update so since the bike would not really crank when it was hott i determined it was not a faulty temp switch or temp sensor because if it were one of those the bike would still crank but not start. Turned out it was my starter. Starter new from suzuki was like 400 something went on.
If hard starting was engine barely or doesnt turn over it would mean two things your battery should be back up to full and with surface charge reserve of 14V 2 volts over full charge 126 or so so battery should not be an issue IF charging ckt and connections are sound. Discussion Starter 1 Jun 21 2015. My Ole JD 4230 starts excellent when cold and will run all day never missing a lick.
If I shut it off after running for an hour to get off and do something and get right back on it wont start. If I let it cool for about 30 minutes it cranks back up why does it not start after engine is hot dangest. The car starts first time in the morning but if she drives it for more than 15 minutes and stops for some reason usually the shops the car will not start again.
The car turns over fine but just will not fire up. If she opens the bonnet and leaves it for 20 - 60 minutes the car will then start. It seams to happen more often on hot days than on.
My bike has hard time starting when it is hot. When cold it starts fine but once warm it just cranks the first time around. After I reset and wait about 10 seconds it generally starts right up.
I live in Phoenix which is about 1600 feet above sea level. But this will only affect the way the solenoid kicks out- it wont help if the actual starter drags when hot. Then you need a stronger starter motor.
But before throwing a starter and solenoid at it or converting to the Ford solenoid id look at the battery cables battery and all connections. Just adding bigger battery cables and making sure they have clean and solid connections can help a lot.
