Trim on boat not working. Why is the trim on my boat not working. If the tilt and trim motor works fine but the engine wont raise or lower slips down when in the raised position or wont stay trimmed chances are that the problem is with the hydraulic pump or valve body assembly. If the level is adequate the problem is most likely with the hydraulic pump.

Trim tabs on a boat fail due to corrosion of the rivets on hinges and relay on the hydraulic press fail due to seawater and corrosion. Some times actuators may leak causing the whole hydraulic pump or electric motor to rust and stop working. As it is carefully adjusted by a tech to limit up a safe trim level.
It can also fail and not allow the 12v to pass through to your bilge mounted trim pump and solenoid. If your able to test for power from your handle switch back then have a look. If your unsure its a great task for a Merc tech as they do this stuff all day long.
With the motor tilted all the way up you will see the arm. Theres a pair of wires that come off the switch. Connect your multimeter to the terminals with the meter set to OHMS.
Move the arm and watch the meter. Thats pretty much all the trim gauge is is an ohm meter. Cplisky 7 Registered User Jan 15 2007 3 Thanks Nightmare.
Then yesterday as I was washing down the boat the motor started coming up on its own so I pushed the trim down button and it quit. A couple minutes later it just started going up again until it maxed out. Not being able to stop it immediately I disconnected the battery so It wouldnt burn the motor up.
Trim gauge not working. Try to loosen up the mounting nuts on back not sure about trim gauges but sometimes if a tach is screwed in too tight it wont work right. The hole in the dash may be a little too tight also see if it moves relatively easily once you loosen the nuts.
Otherwise your guage is junk. If the tilt and trim motor works fine but the engine wont raise or lower slips down when in the raised position or wont stay trimmed chances are that the problem is with the hydraulic pump or valve body assembly. Start by checking the hydraulic fluid reservoir level.
In this video I do some more troubleshooting to find out why the tilt trim was not working in my boat and why my Volvo. Is my tilt trim relay bad in my boat. Trim up is working but trim down is not how do I make it work.

O kay got it. If it clicks then you have bad trim solenoids. The way they work is when you hit trim up the up relay applies power to the trim pump and the down relay applies ground to the trim pump.
When you reverse that and hit trim down the up relay applies ground to the pump and the down relay applies power. Trim Indicator not working. By AsLan7 Sun Nov 29 2020 505 pm.
Sun Nov 29 2020 431 pm So I recently bought a 240 81Gi DP. While the Tilt works just fine the indicator does not. I was thinking about working on this over the winter.
One trim tab is not working on a bayliner 285. The boat is a 2006 that was out of the water for 4 years. 1 side port works ok but the starbord motor just wirls away.
On the trim gauge the switchessending units on the sides of the outdrive may be corroded but with your multimeter you could read across the trim gauge wires and look for the reading to change as you move the drive up and down. If you get the reading from the wires the gauge could be bad. Cableguy Greg Pittsburgh PA Member Posts.
First time boat owner question on trim tabs. They are not working. I have a 2013 290EC and the Lenco trim tab is the model with the rubber pad on the dash.
It doesnt have power as it has no lights and the tabs dont work. I need help to fix. I know enough to first try to see if its a blown fuse.
The fuse in the cockpit isnt popped out. Trimming the drive unit up too high while the boat is running can cause serious damage andor injury. When this switch fails the TRIM BUTTON does not work.
Only the TRAILER BUTTON will work. When one switch fails you will end up replacing both switches. This is because the switches are sold in sets of two.
Trim on my outboard not working properly Posted by puffulufogous on 61111 at 616 am 0 0 So I have an old Nissan 40D outboard on my boat and the previous two trips all had been working fine. We have a 2014 Sweetwater 2086. The trim updown switch on the throttleshift lever only works to raise the motor.
The down button is no longer working. A couple of weeks ago the down button worked intermittently. If I continued to push the button it may or may not work.
Now it doesnt work.
