Yamaha outboard starter solenoid problems. That starter relay did the same thing. When put back together then trim up and down did not work but solenoids clicked. So i then decided it must be ground issue or voltage drop.
Went out this morning to get some reading and the trim works but the starter will not engage. Starter relay just clicking. Then go to the output side of the starter with the voltmeter.
Have a helper turn the key to start. If you get 11 volts or better out of the solenoid the starter is bad. If you are getting way less than 12 volts out of the solenoid then the starter solenoid is bad.
It is normal to get a little bit of voltage loss across the solenoid. In addition to the starter you must consider that the solenoid on the outboard engine has gone bad. This part is responsible for transmitting battery voltage to your starting motor.
The contact located inside the starter solenoid activates a circuit to open and allow electrical current. To start and run a Yamaha outboard needs a properly timed ignition and correct airfuel ratio. Also be sure to check if the emergency shutoff switch cap is in place.
If it still wont crank check the neutral switch. If you hear a clicking sound when the starter motor attempts to. If you can jumper battery voltage to the control circuit side of the starter relay and the motor cranks and starts but when using the starter button switch it neither cranks nor starts then you have a wiring issue.

When i turn the ignition key on the controls there is a click coming from the engine then nothing else. I checked the voltage between the negative terminal on the starter motor and the positive terminal on the starter relay and it is. Perform a check on the starter and inspect bendixdrive gears.
